Réveille le soir and Montreal’s Lafontaine tunnel is crumbling down around you while the metronome of lights keeps steady time on your windscreen. Unburden yourself of the monotony of the 401. Midnight has arrived at the Lion’s Gate in a SAAB 900 without headlights: apocalyptic red above, submarine blue below, and the promise of neon on the horizon. The radio is broken but that’s ok because someone stayed up late to record Black Celebration and King Sunny Ade on a dual cassette deck and you have the mix tape. Eine kleine nachtmusik never made your heart beat so hard, you Nightriders of the Purple Sage! This is the sound the West makes after forty days and nights. The hippies have abandoned their new polygamy where sand meets asphalt. Is the frontier only suburbia after all? Beyond Wilderness, between the suburbs and the sea, something stirs inside the shiny skin of the new metropole. Waves break on concrete, the road ends but the music makes you want to drive forever.
