In the day and age where social media has become almost as important as the music itself, we as a band struggle to know how to keep you engaged. I’m talking to You, mom, dad, and close friends who frequent our twitter page and, should we be so lucky, our instagram.
Do you like selfies of a band in a van? Endless photos of highways and plane wings and empty wine bottles strategically placed to give the illusion that we are living glamorous and extravagant lives? If you answered no, then you should probably leave the internet. However, it does beg the question is there something more interesting? More so than the common humble-brag us bands employ to make us seem interesting to you, if the music doesn’t hook you enough?
As an attempt to keep you engaged with what we do and our passion for music, It is with great pleasure that we offer you a monthly playlist series curated by me, Louise, on the first of every month. Or the second, in this case, because I was in a tube in the sky yesterday without access to my beloved internet. Something to look forward to as much as your Susan Miller monthly horoscope write up and perhaps it will bring you as much pleasure as it does for me to make them. This is my guinea pig run, so I’m going to keep it relatively short and with a few sentences about each song and why I’ve chosen them.
As I write this I am on a train from Barcelona to Lleida, Spain on tour with my own project, fresh from the Gold & Youth UK tour, so here are a selection of tunes that are getting me through this massive bout of jet lag and red eyed sunrises.
I woke up today in Barcelona still drunk from a classic night out with friends in Barri Gotic. I had way too much wine and “tapas” for dinner, so I’m feeling a little delicate. We had to wake early, 6:45am to be exact, to get to the train station on time so I wandered out of the hotel before we left to grab myself a coffee as an attempt to delay the inevitable passionate hangover comedown. I stumbled into a boutique hotel I’d recently become obsessed with “trendy architecture! chic-as-fuck! beautifully lit!” and purchased an overpriced “americano”. I sat at the shiny ebony table and gazed into the abyss, trying to understand how I’d get from the hotel to a cab to a train station in my current state when this song came on. I don’t know if it was just the mood lighting and gentle god-like sound of Liz Fraser, but this peaceful glittering song gave me comfort and eased my dehydrated brain. Liz Fraser may as well be Jesus Christ. She is a heeler. She is a true gift. Ugh. sorry I’m still drunk.
I know, I know, I’m turning you off of my playlist by including this, but I don’t care. I heard this song SO MUCH in the UK it was like we had suddenly died and woken up in 1998. It’s like Cher “Believe” era techno-lite for moms. I hope this isn’t foreshadowing. This one is for Murray.
I was introduced to this song by the band Nouvelle Vague- remember them? A new wave hidden gem. I think they were big in Scotland exclusively…
Sorry purists- you’re wrong. This is a great cover.
I like listening to this when I’m on a turbulent flight. It just makes sense… That’s been one of my tricks for as long as I can remember. Turbulence? Feed your fear with fast music. It is FUN
Coolest band ever- an Indonesian all girl garage band from the 60’s garage era. They are adorable. This makes me so happy.
This is in my head all the time. Actually. All the fucking time. And for that, I am very grateful.
Good jet lag music, or just good music in general, for all states of mind.
It’s October and I am in sunny Spain!
Lou meant a lot to me. He meant a lot to a lot of people. When I first got into the Velvets it literally re-calucated my musical trajectory path. He changed the way I thought about melody and emoting in song. He was the coolest cat, The king of avant garde, and he perfected the genre of happy-sad. This song is one of my all time favourites and I am so lucky I got to see him perform once in my life. Rest in peace man.
Until Canada gets with the times I have resorted to using links to youtube. As soon as we get spotify I will have a better streaming source. If you have any recommendations let a sista know.
